May 2020 - Acto Uno: Heroes and Monsters
During our time in quarantine, we have been working on a new piece, Heroes & Monsters. It’s a play in development that explores how social media influences can embody the characteristics of monsters and heroes. We want to capture the juxtaposition between real life and the internet; making the world of a video game where you can win some or lose some, but you survive to continue the fight. We are going to call upon themes of La Lucha, Latin American mythology, and modern superheroes and villains. This new play will revolve around a few questions…. Are heroes created? What makes a true monster? Can someone truly be just one or a mixture of both?
As we work on this piece together we are finding the true fundamentals of our characters and storytelling. We have a few clips on our own take in these characters. During this time we have expanded our work in new ways through multimedia. We have each submitted a video prompts about our character.
One of the most beautiful aspects of our group is collaboration. Devising theater might sound a bit chaotic when you think of the 15 shared voices, but in the end, true art is created. One of our methods is improvising as we write. We grab the group of characters and let them continue the script through their own stream of consciousness. Surprisingly, being quarantined has also helped us further develop our piece. It’s given us the time to truly go in-depth with the characters, concept, and storyline.
Music! That’s one of the most vital steps in our creative process. Whether we’re making it or just listening to it, it’s a foundation of LXTP. We have put together a playlist for the true theme that we want from our new piece, H&M. Listening to this we hope our vision for the play can show through.
