Dia De Los Muertos With LXTP

November 2nd, we had our very first Dia De Los Muertos event. We had been wanting to have a community event that would showcase a very important holiday and wanted it to be respectful, fun, and heartfelt. 

Community Ofrenda

Audience has put their flowers on the altar decorating it with past loved ones names.

We invited community members to set up ofrendas/altars for people they wanted to honor and remember. The Hispanic Women's Organization of Arkansas made their ofrenda for fellow members and the community that lost their lives due to COVID-19. Teen Action Support Center created their ofrenda for pets that have passed. Local Artist and Activist, Toxic, made his for his grandmother. We did ofrendas for Celia Cruz, Chavela Vargas, Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Chespirito, and Walter Mercado. We wanted this event to include the people that attended, so we created a community ofrenda. The attendees were encouraged to leave cempasuchil flowers with a tag naming someone that they had lost. Seeing everyone’s paper flowers on the altar was very moving. 

It’s not a LatinX Theatre Project event without performances. As a group, we wrote poems celebrating death and remembering our loved ones and performed it surrounded by the ofrendas. Outside of the ofrenda room, we shared musical performances from past projects featuring our members, Martin, Sativa, Yesenia, and beats by our producer Joaquin. 

It’s also not a celebration without food! For our attendees, we brought pan dulce, coffee, tacos from Street Tacos, and tamales from Morelia's Mexican Restaurant. A cempasuchil flower-making station and games for the kids. 

We are so thankful to everyone that contributed to this event and to all that came to celebrate and remember our past loved ones with us. We love our people and hope to bring you all another Dia De Los Muertos event next year.
